The Green Team Mission Statement

"We the Staff, Parents and Students of Monmouth Beach Elementary School aim to promote healthy habits and take actions that improve sustainability within our School and our local Community. Under the guidance of our Board of Education and together with our school leadership, we will work within the framework of Sustainable Jersey for Schools to improve all school practices with the goal of implementing a green culture."

News from the Green Team

Green Team News:
Monmouth Beach School participated in the 2020 Environmental Defense Fund
Fellow Program over the summer, in partnership with EDF and New Jersey
Natural Gas.
As a participant in the program, we received technical assistance from an EDF
Fellow specially trained in energy project assessment and development. He
worked with staff to advance energy efficiency in school operations and
facilities, and assisted us thereby in obtaining Sustainable Jersey for Schools
certification.
MBS was granted bronze certification by Sustainable Jersey for Schools (SJS) this fall, which is
valid for three years, as long as we are continuing to progress on required actions to improve our
environment and sustainable practices. We are awaiting arrival of recycling and compost bins for
the lunchroom, as well as a composter for the atrium gardens. These were purchased through a
SJS grant. The students will be instructed on their use and periodic evaluations will be
performed to assess the amount and type of waste we generate. The reusable water bottles will
help us greatly in decreasing plastic waste.
A green fair was held in conjunction with the Clean Ocean Action Beachsweep on October 24,
2020. It was a lovely beach day with a large number of families attending one or both activities.
Displays of COA, our environmental commission, and beautification committee were staffed by
their representatives, and we also hosted local honey and herbal products vendors, and a
seaglass jewelry designer. The Green Team showcased environmentally safer alternatives to
everyday products. We plan to hold our next fair in April 2021 around Earth Day.

Our Green Team is launching a "Sustainability Calendar" available on the Monmouth Beach School website. November is our very first month and we envourage Monmouth Beach students and their parents to check it out and give us some feedback.
